The Department of International Economic Relations (MSE) was established in 1970 as part of the Institute of Foreign Trade of the University of Gdańsk, which was established at that time. It is the organizational continuation of the Department of International Economic Relations existing at the Higher School of Economics in Sopot since 1968 (established, among other things, in connection with the creation of the field of study: economics of foreign trade).

The first head of the Department in the years 1970-1972 was prof. dr hab. Stanisław Ładyka. In the years 1974-2008, the Department was headed by prof. dr hab. Antoni Makać. Since 2008, the head of the Department has been prof. dr hab. Ewa Oziewicz, and since 2020 dr hab. Sylwia Pangsy-Kania, professor at the University of Gdańsk.

The Department of International Economic Relations conducts classes at all levels of studies - both for the entire Faculty of Economics and for specializations operating within the Department of International Business (foreign trade, marketing, international finance and banking, international business), as well as at other faculties of the University of Gdańsk (e.g. the Faculty of Philology). The Department also conducts numerous diploma seminars (bachelor's and master's) at both full-time and part-time studies, and doctoral seminars at doctoral studies.

For many years, the Department of International Economic Relations has been cooperating well with numerous research centers in Poland and abroad.
