University of Gdańsk in the prestigious Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020
Times Higher Education has published the prestigious ranking of higher education institutions implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda, addressing the most important global issues of the contemporary world, such as poverty, social inequalities, lack of adequate access to knowledge, climate change, and environmental degradation.
In the ranking published on April 22, 2020, the THE Impact Rankings University of Gdańsk was rated very highly for its contribution to the implementation of Goal 14. "Life below water". In this category, the university ranked 42nd out of 242 higher education institutions worldwide. This significant achievement confirms the high position of the University of Gdańsk (co-creating the European University of the Seas, SEA-EU) among universities conducting research and education related to marine topics.
The university also scored highly in the implementation of Goal 11. "Sustainable Cities and Communities" - ranking between 101-200 among 470 universities evaluated in this Goal. The university's efforts to eliminate the negative effects of rapid urbanization, improve resource efficiency, reduce pollution, and ensure access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation, and more, making cities safe, resilient, sustainable, and inclusive, were recognized.
In the overall global ranking covering all 17 Goals, 766 top higher education institutions from 85 countries participated, including 5 from Poland. The University of Gdańsk was ranked in the 301-400 range. The University of Warsaw was in the same range. The AGH University of Science and Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology, and Wrocław University of Science and Technology were ranked in the 401-600 range.
THE Impact Rankings reflects the current trend in the discussion on assessing the social and economic significance and impact of higher education institutions. In addition to the scientific and educational activities of universities, the ranking also considers activities within the so-called third mission of universities and their socio-economic engagement. Thus, the ranking promotes and emphasizes the importance of these activities, the contribution of universities to the realization of the global development agenda, and their impact on improving the quality of life, the environment, and climate. The very high position of the University of Gdańsk in this ranking confirms its strength in selected areas of scientific specialization, as well as the significance of its research, education, and cooperation with the socio-economic environment for the development of the city of Gdańsk and the entire region.
