PROCEDURE FOR THE AWARD OF THE DOCTORAL DEGREE (EXTERNAL MODE)
The Economics and Finance Discipline Council at the Faculty of Economics, University of Gdańsk, is vested with the authority to confer the academic degrees of Doctor and Habilitated Doctor. Individuals seeking to obtain the degree of Doctor may apply for the award of this degree under the external procedure. The stages of the procedure are outlined below.
Actions required of the candidate
- Stage prior to submitting the application to initiate the procedure
- Preparation of a preliminary concept of the dissertation.
- Identification of a prospective supervisor and obtaining his/her written consent.
- Preparation of:
- a schedule for the completion of the dissertation,
- a list of scientific achievements,
- information on any previous doctoral proceedings, if applicable.
- Application for appointment of supervisor
- Submission of an application to the Discipline Council for the appointment of a supervisor or supervisors.
- Where applicable, submission of an application for the appointment of an auxiliary supervisor, accompanied by written consent and agreement with the main supervisor.
- The supervisor and auxiliary supervisor are responsible for providing the candidate with substantive and methodological support.
- Conclusion of agreement
- Signing an agreement with the University of Gdańsk specifying the amount and terms of payment of the fee for the procedure.
- Signing an agreement with the University of Gdańsk specifying the amount and terms of payment of the fee for the procedure.
- Application to initiate the procedure
Submission of the application to the Chair of the Discipline Council, accompanied by:
- the doctoral dissertation together with a positive opinion of the supervisor,
- documents confirming the required qualifications,
- a certificate of foreign language proficiency (minimum level B2),
- a scientific publication and a statement of individual contribution (in the case of co-authored publications),
- where necessary, explanations concerning the absence of co-authors’ statements.
Actions undertaken by the Discipline Council
- Actions following submission of the application
- Verification of the dissertation through the Unified Antiplagiarism System.
- Appointment of a committee to evaluate the application.
- Adoption of a resolution by the Discipline Council to initiate the procedure (or refusal thereof, with justification).
- Actions during the procedure
- Appointment of the Doctoral Committee by the Discipline Council.
- Appointment of three reviewers from outside the University of Gdańsk and the employing institution of the candidate.
- Administration of the doctoral examination in the discipline relevant to the dissertation. In the case of an unsatisfactory grade, the examination may be retaken once, not earlier than three months after the initial attempt.
- Defense of the dissertation
- Conduct of a public defense of the dissertation, which may also be held remotely.
- Presence of the supervisor, at least one reviewer, and at least half of the members of the Discipline Council or the Doctoral Committee is required.
- Post-defense stage
- Adoption of a resolution on the acceptance (or rejection) of the defense.
- Adoption of a resolution on the award (or refusal to award) of the doctoral degree within 60 days of the defense.
