A visit to the Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk in Hel by students of the Faculty of Economics
On November 30th, 2024, a group of students from the International Business and Logistics and Mobility programs at the Faculty of Economics, participated in an inspiring trip to the Marine Station in Hel, part of the University of Gdańsk. The visit was organized under the guidance of Professor Jacek Zaucha and Tomasz Laskowicz, with the journey starting by train from Gdynia to the Hel Peninsula.
Upon arrival, students explored the rich history of Hel and admired the unique architecture of this charming seaside town. At the Marine Station, they were warmly welcomed by veterinarian Dominika Jonakowska, who introduced them to the station's mission. She provided insights into the rehabilitation of seals and the scientific research conducted on-site. A highlight of the visit was the captivating seal feeding and medical training session, which offered unforgettable experiences. Following this, the group toured the seal sanctuary, observing these fascinating animals up close.
Another notable stop was the Harbour Porpoise House, an educational centre, part of the Marine Station named after Professor Krzysztof Skóra. Here, students learned about the rare and endangered porpoise species, a vital symbol of biodiversity conservation in the Baltic Sea.
The visit concluded with a trip to the Fisheries Museum in Hel, housed in a former Evangelical church. Students learned about the history of fishing and discovered a rich collection of boats and artefacts tied to maritime traditions. A climb to the church tower offered breathtaking views of Hel and the Gulf of Gdańsk.
This extraordinary trip provided students with valuable hands-on experience, combining education with practical insights and emphasising the importance of environmental conservation in the context of international business and mobility.
We extend our gratitude to the staff of the Marine Station, especially Dr Dominika Jonakowska, for the detailed tour and the opportunity to witness the seal training session.
Special gratitude also goes to the Dean of the Faculty of Economics for providing financial support for visiting the Fisheries Museum, part of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk.
