About Department

The Department of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade at the University of Gdańsk is an institution with a rich and layered history, dating back to World War II, when its roots were connected to the activities of the Maritime Institute at the Underground University of the Western Lands. Its legacy is also continued by such prestigious institutions as the Higher School of Maritime Trade and the Higher School of Economics in Sopot with its Maritime Faculty. These pre-war and post-war educational centers initiated the tradition of educating economic specialists dedicated to industries related to maritime transport, trade, and the broader maritime economy, even before the University of Gdańsk was formally established.

Supporting the development of the maritime economy of the Polish coast, the Department of Maritime Transport and Trade takes pride in the legacy of distinguished figures such as Stanisław Darski, Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski, Bolesław Kasprowicz, Tadeusz Ocioszyński, and Tadeusz Łodykowski, who contributed to its formation.

In modern times, the Department of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade not only continues its traditional educational and research missions in the field of maritime transport and trade but also dynamically adapts its teaching programs to meet current and future economic needs. In response to the evolving demands of the labor market and changes in the global economy, the Department has expanded its focus to include modern topics such as globalization, the digital economy, and new technologies in maritime transport.

The Department of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade is currently organized into three divisions:

  • Division of Maritime Economy,
  • Division of Global Economy,
  • Division of Digital Economy.

This reflects its interdisciplinary and innovative approach to teaching and research. This structure allows for an effective combination of traditional values with new perspectives, which is essential for preparing students for the challenges of the modern maritime economy.

The Department is not only a witness to but also a participant in the ongoing changes in the maritime sector, promoting knowledge, innovation, and best practices among future industry leaders. Through its educational and research activities, the Department of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade at the University of Gdańsk is paving the way to the future, shaping experts ready to meet global challenges in maritime transport and trade.
