Oxford Economist in Sopot. Prof. Paul Collier to Meet Students of the University of Gdansk and Residents of the Tricity

Paul Collier Sir Paul Collier from the University of Oxford is one of the most influential contemporary economists and the author of the book Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places. For many years, Prof. Collier has focused on issues of economic development, regional inequalities, and socio-economic exclusion. His research and publications have inspired governments, international institutions, and academic communities worldwide.

The meeting with Prof. Collier will take place on April 16 at 1:30 PM in Lecture Hall C-9 at the Faculty of Management of the University of Gdansk in Sopot, in the building of the University of Gdansk Didactic and Conference Centre located at 9 Piaskowa Street in Sopot, as part of the 6th edition of the Local Government Finance Congress. It is addressed to students, pupils, and all those interested in the future of regional development and local communities. The event will provide an opportunity to learn from the Professor’s experience and his latest book. The Centre for Strategic Thought has planned the Polish premiere of his newest book Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places during the congress.

  • How can we build inclusive growth in a world of rising inequalities?
  • Why do some places prosper while others fall behind?
  • Where are contemporary cities and socio-economic development heading?
  • Why can the place you live determine so much?
  • Why do social inequalities arise, and how can they be reduced?

These are questions without simple answers, but participants of this open meeting will attempt to explore them.

The meeting will take the form of an open lecture on building more sustainable and collaborative development models for less affluent regions, combined with a discussion and a Q&A session with the audience. It will be moderated by Dr. Beata Chmiel from the University of Gdansk, laureate of the Jan Uphagen Award of the City of Gdansk for Young Scientists.

The event is the result of cooperation between the Centre for Strategic Thought Foundation and the University of Gdansk and is held under the patronage of the City of Sopot.
