Professor Stanisław Ładyka

One of the founders of the centre of economic education in Sopot

Stanislaw Ładyka was born on 1 January 1928 in Tarlow. His research and teaching work began in the Higher School of Economics in Sopot, already throughout the Master's studies. He obtained a Master's Degree at the School of Maritime Trade (later the Higher School of Economics in Sopot) in 1952, and then the Ph.D. in economics at the Higher School of Economics in Sopot. In 1973 he became a professor.

Professor Ładyka led the Chair of Economics of International Economic Relations and the Institute of Foreign Trade. In 1972 he was transferred to the School of Planning and Statistics, where he became the director of the Institutes of Foreign Trade Policy, Economics and International Economic Relations. In  Sopot, he served as Deputy Dean, Dean and Rector and deputy organizer of the University of Gdansk in the years 1969-1970. From 1977-1981 he worked in the Polish commercial representation office in Montreal as an economic advisor. Professor Ładyka was a member of many scientific councils at the ministry of higher education, ministry of foreign trade and ministerial research institutes. He was also an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Economic Cooperation and a member of the Group of Experts of UNCTAD.

In 2001 Professor Ładyka was awarded the honoris causa doctorate from the University of Gdańsk for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of international economic relations and laying the foundations of this discipline in Poland, as well as the special contribution in the creation and development of Sopot's center of economic studies, a highly fruitful contribution to the education and development of an academic staff and organization activity that has donated to the exceptional position of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot and then Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk.

Major works of Prof. Stanislaw Ładyka are: individually made translation and adaptation of the renowned book by P.R. Krugman and M. Obstfeld "International Economics. Theory and Policy" by Harper Collins College Publications, issued by the PWN (1993 and 1997); translation and adaptation of "Study Guide to Accompany Krugman and Obstfeld's International Economics: Theory and Policy” by L.S. Goldberg and M.W. Klein (Harper Collins, Inc.); Professor’s original book, devoted to the theory of international regional economic integration "Z teorii integracji gospodarczej", SGH 2000.
