A meeting with Professor Paul Collier from the University of Oxford, who delivered a lecture on “Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places”

On April 15, 2026, an open meeting was held with Professor Paul Collier, a distinguished economist, professor at the University of Oxford, and author of publications on economic development.

Professor Paul Collier delivered a lecture on the themes of his book Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places, in which he analyzes the situation of regions and communities that are overlooked in economic growth.

In his speech, Professor Collier pointed out that contemporary inequalities affect not only individuals but also cities, smaller towns, and regions that are losing development opportunities to large metropolitan areas. He also emphasized that economic development cannot be assessed solely through the lens of efficiency and growth, but should also consider social cohesion, the dignity of work, and the strength of local communities. The lecture provided both an in-depth diagnosis of current development challenges and inspiration for seeking more inclusive models of economic policy.

During the event, the Polish edition of Professor Collier’s latest book, Left Behind: A New Economics for Neglected Places, was officially launched. Active participants who asked the most interesting questions during the discussion following the lecture received copies of the book, which the author was happy to sign.

The event attracted a large audience interested in contemporary economic challenges. Attendees included students from schools in Sopot, faculty members and students of the University of Gdańsk, numerous representatives of the Centrum Myśli Strategicznych, as well as representatives of the dean’s authorities from the Faculty of Management and the Faculty of Economics: Anna Dziadkiewicz, Associate Professor at the University of Gdańsk and Vice-Dean for Internationalization and Development (who hosted the meeting), and Magdalena Markiewicz, Vice-Dean for Development and Cooperation with the Socio-Economic Environment. The post-lecture discussion was moderated by Beata Chmiel from the Department of Logistics at the Faculty of Economics.

The meeting took place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Management at the University of Gdańsk as part of the 6th edition of the Local Government Financial Congress (Samorządowy Kongres Finansowy).

The event was the result of cooperation between the Strategic Thought Center Foundation (Fundacja Centrum Myśli Strategicznych) and the University of Gdańsk, and was held under the patronage of the City of Sopot.

Many individuals and institutions were involved in the preparation and implementation of the event, whose organizational and substantive support contributed to the high quality and success of the meeting.
