Meeting Topics
Topic 1
a) What is a BL (Bill of Lading)
A Bill of Lading is a fundamental document in maritime transport that serves three functions: it is evidence of a contract of carriage, a receipt confirming that the carrier has received the goods, and a document of title to the goods.
b) What information is included on a BL
A BL contains details of the shipper, consignee, and notify party.
It includes a description of the cargo (name, quantity, weight, volume, packaging).
It specifies the port of loading and discharge, vessel name, voyage number, and dates.
It includes the BL number, freight terms (prepaid/collect), and Terms and Conditions.
The document is signed by the carrier or its agent.
c) Document release (cargo release methods)
- SWB (Sea Waybill) – a non-negotiable document; cargo is released to the consignee without presentation of the original BL.
- TLX (Telex Release) – electronic cargo release after surrender of original BLs at the port of loading.
- RAD (Release Against Documents) – cargo release after confirmation that documentary requirements (e.g. banking conditions) have been met.
- Print at Origin – original BL printed and issued at the port of loading.
- “To Order” – a negotiable BL; title to the goods is transferred by endorsement.
- BL Links – a digital platform for secure exchange and management of BLs.
- eBL (WAVE) – an electronic bill of lading, legally equivalent to the paper version, transferred digitally.
