Prof. Jacek Zaucha as an Expert at the 12th Polish–Taiwanese Seminar in Keelung

Prof. dr hab. Jacek Zaucha, Head of the Department of International Economics and Economic Development at the Faculty of Economics, University of Gdańsk, represented Poland during the 12th Polish–Taiwanese Seminar, held on 3–4 November 2025 in the port city of Keelung, Taiwan.

The event focused on marine sciences and maritime technologies, marking the continuation of long-term cooperation between the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR) and Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (NSTC).

Prof. Zaucha delivered a presentation titled “Coastal Defense in Polish Marine Spatial Planning”, in which he shared Poland’s experience in marine spatial planning and coastal resilience in the face of climate change. His talk attracted significant interest from participants and sparked a discussion on the role of integrated spatial planning in promoting the sustainable development of coastal regions.

During the session devoted to marine environmental protection, Prof. Jacek Zaucha co-chaired part of the proceedings together with Prof. Wei-Po Huang from the National Taiwan Ocean University, focusing on the exchange of experiences between Poland and Taiwan in coastal management and marine spatial planning.

The two-day seminar brought together leading scientists from Poland and Taiwan, including experts from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Gdańsk University of Technology, University of Gdańsk, and National Taiwan University. The participants discussed, among other topics, innovations in coastal protection, water management, the role of oceans in the climate system, and the potential of “blue carbon” -carbon dioxide captured by marine and coastal ecosystems.

The academic coordinators of the seminar were Prof. Tymon Zieliński from the Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) and Prof. Wen-Chen Chou from the Institute of Marine Environment and Ecology, National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU). The National Centre for Research and Development was represented by Cezary Błaszczyk, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department, and Paulina Puchalska, Coordinator of Polish–Taiwanese Cooperation.

Prof. Cheng-Yu Ku, Vice President of the National Taiwan Ocean University, expressed his appreciation for the chosen theme of the event, emphasizing the importance of knowledge exchange between Polish and Taiwanese researchers in the field of marine resource management. He also pointed out the potential for broad knowledge sharing and technology transfer.

Prof. Jacek Zaucha’s participation in this prestigious event reaffirms the University of Gdańsk's strong international standing in research on marine economy and sustainable development. The exchange of expertise with Taiwanese partners opens new opportunities for research collaboration in the areas of spatial planning, maritime innovation, and environmental protection.
