The „Young Explorers of Economics” Event at the Faculty of Economics, University of Gdańsk
On 16 April 2026, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdańsk hosted the “Little Explorers of Economics” event, attended by Class 3A from Primary School No. 43 in Gdańsk. The meeting was not only a valuable educational initiative, but also a clear manifestation of the consistent implementation of the Faculty’s strategic objectives in the areas of cooperation with the socio-economic environment, the dissemination of knowledge, and the strengthening of ties with the local community.
The event was opened by Dr Magdalena Markiewicz, Deputy Dean for Development and Cooperation with Socio-Economic Environment, who introduced the youngest participants to the idea of social participation using the example of the University of Gdańsk Academic Participatory Budget. The children had an opportunity to learn how projects proposed by the Faculty of Economics community are developed, as well as how these initiatives are implemented and transformed into concrete actions supporting the University’s development.
Another point on the programme was a tour of the Faculty, during which Dr Magdalena Markiewicz and Anna Michalska-Szajer, MA guided the participants through the key spaces most frequently used by students. This encounter with everyday academic life helped the children better understand the university as a place of learning, cooperation, and development.
An important part of the event was also the workshops prepared by students, which demonstrated the significant role that the engagement of the academic community and the sharing of knowledge in an accessible and inspiring way play in the Faculty’s activities. Students from the Students Club in International Finance conducted engaging sessions devoted to the history of money, complemented by a quiz on global finance. Participants were able not only to test their knowledge, but also to win University of Gdańsk branded gifts. Considerable interest was also sparked by the opportunity to see what PLN 100,000 processed into briquettes looks like and how much it weighs, which became an attractive and memorable educational experience for the children.
In the next part of the meeting, students from the Students Club in Logistics delivered an engaging workshop entitled “What, Where, When and for How Much? – Discovering the Secrets of Logistics.” Using a playful format and the example of chocolate production, they introduced participants to the basic mechanisms governing logistics and the organisation of economic processes.
The event concluded with the presentation of certificates to all participants by the Deputy Dean. Both the guests and the organisers agreed that the meeting was highly successful, combining educational value with the building of positive relations between the University and its wider social environment.
The “Little Explorers of Economics” event is an example of the initiatives through which the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdańsk effectively implements its development strategy: strengthening cooperation with its environment, promoting economic knowledge, and shaping an open, socially responsible academic space. Particularly significant is the fact that the beneficiaries of this initiative were the youngest members of society, demonstrating that economic education can be successfully delivered from the earliest stages of learning in a way that is attractive, engaging, and responsive to the challenges of the modern world.
