Deputy Dean for Research of the Faculty of Economics, Leszek Czerwonka, Associate Professor at the University of Gdańsk, at a meeting with the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education

On 18 February 2026, a debate entitled “Science and Higher Education from the Perspective of the Discipline of Economics and Finance – Challenges and Directions for Change” was held at the Staszic Palace in Warsaw, with the participation of Dr. Karolina Zioło-Pużuk, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The event was attended by Leszek Czerwonka, Associate Professor at the University of Gdańsk and Deputy Dean for Research of the Faculty of Economics, who represented the University of Gdańsk as Chair of the Scientific Council of Economics and Finance.

The invitation to the meeting, addressed to chairs of discipline councils for Economics and Finance, was issued by Prof. Marzenna Weresa – Chair of the Committee on Economic Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) and member of Section V (Social Sciences) of the Council of Scientific Excellence; Prof. Krzysztof Jajuga – Chair of the Committee on Finance of PAS and Chair of Section V (Social Sciences) of the Council of Scientific Excellence; and Prof. Bogumił Kamiński – Chair of the Committee on Statistics and Econometrics of PAS and Chair of the Scientific Council for the Discipline of Economics and Finance at the SGH Warsaw School of Economics.

The aim of the meeting was to exchange views and discuss key issues relevant to the community of economic sciences, in particular the principles and course of the upcoming evaluation of research activity – including the assessment of academic journals – as well as procedures for awarding doctoral and habilitation degrees and the practice of proceedings conducted by the Council of Scientific Excellence.

During the debate, the Secretary of State presented the planned directions of regulatory changes in science and higher education and the timeline for their implementation. Of particular importance to participants were the details concerning the future evaluation framework and announcements regarding a new list of academic journals, presented both in the main presentation and in responses to questions from the academic community.

In separate presentations, Prof. Krzysztof Jajuga, Prof. Marzenna Weresa, Prof. Bogumił Kamiński and Prof. Marian Gorynia discussed key challenges related to the evaluation of research activity, the assessment of journals in the discipline of Economics and Finance, and promotion procedures as applied in practice by the Council of Scientific Excellence, also presenting proposals from the academic community for changes in these areas.

Participation of the representative of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk in the meeting is an important element of cooperation with institutions shaping science policy in Poland. The information obtained will support preparations for upcoming changes in the evaluation system and for improving promotion and publication procedures in our discipline
