Representatives of the Faculty of Economics at the 11th Congress of Polish Economists

 

Representatives of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdańsk actively participated in the 11th Congress of Polish Economists, one of the most important scientific events in the country, held on 4–5 December 2025 in Poznań and coinciding with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Polish Economic Society (PTE).

 

The Congress, held under the theme “Economics and the Economy in Times of Uncertainty” brought together around 600 experts and scholars.

 

Its extensive programme included over 60 debates and thematic sessions of key importance for contemporary economics, including 3 plenary sessions, 28 panel discussions, 26 scientific sessions (featuring 161 research papers), and 37 poster presentations.

The opening of the Congress was conducted by dr hab. Beata Majecka, Associate Professor at UG, who serves as the Secretary General of the Polish Economic Society, moderated the inaugural session.
 

Opening speeches were delivered by Prof. Marian Gorynia, President of the Polish Economic Society and representative of the Poznań University of Economics and Business, Prof. Marek Kośny, Chair of the Scientific Council of the Polish Economic Society, Prof. Bogdan Ślusarz, Vice-President of the Polish Economic Society; Wojciech Jankowiak, Deputy Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region, Jacek Jaśkowiak, Mayor of Poznań; and Prof. Marcin Piątkowski (World Bank, Kozminski University).

 

The Congress was honoured by the presence of world-class economists:

  • Prof. Dani Rodrik (Harvard University) – a distinguished scholar of globalization, labour markets and structural transformation, who delivered the keynote lecture Shared Prosperity in a Fractured World;
  • Prof. Beata Javorcik (EBRD, Oxford University) – Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, an expert in international trade and foreign investment, who presented the keynote lecture Globalisation in Times of Anxiety.

 

Representatives of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk actively participated in the Congress and contributed to several thematic sessions.

  • Dr Mirosław Jodko took part as a panelist in the discussion “The History of Economic Societies in Poland” devoted to the evolution and role of economic societies in shaping Polish economic thought, their contribution to public debate, and their importance for integrating the community of economists.
  • Dr Magdalena Markiewicz contributed as a panelist in the session “The Importance of ESG Strategies for the Development of the Financial Sector” in which the discussion focused on the growing role of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles in the financial sector, the spectrum of risks and challenges for the banking and insurance industries, the impact of regulatory frameworks on financial institutions, and the significance of sustainable strategies for the resilience and future of financial markets.
  • The research session “Economic Integration and International Trade” was moderated by dr hab. Joanna Bednarz, Associate Professor at UG, together with Artur Klimek, PhD, Associate Professor at UE, from the Wrocław University of Economics and Business. During this session, dr hab. Joanna Kuczewska, Associate Professor at UG, presented, together with her co-authors, a research paper on the functioning of SMEs within the EU Digital Single Market, using Poland and Croatia as examples.
    The session focused on changes in global value chains, export competitiveness, and emerging trends in international trade.

 

The participation of representatives of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk in such a prestigious event highlights the University’s active role in national and international economic debate. Their presence in plenary, panel, and research sessions demonstrates the high quality of scientific work carried out at the University of Gdańsk and the strong engagement of its researchers in analysing key challenges of the contemporary economy.
