Farewell to Dr. Piotr Nowina-Konopka

With deep sorrow, we announce that on June 13, 2025, Dr. Piotr Nowina-Konopka passed away — an economist, diplomat, lecturer, former Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, and engaged public servant.

Dr. Piotr Nowina-Konopka was a graduate of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot and the University of Gdansk. He held a PhD in economics and was affiliated with the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdansk from 1978 to 1989 as an assistant professor at the Institute of International Business.

He was a participant in and witness to pivotal moments in Polish history — serving as press spokesman for the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity,” a participant in the Round Table Talks, Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the President and the Prime Minister, a member of the Polish Parliament for three terms, and one of the architects of Poland’s accession to the European Union.

He held numerous international positions, including Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the Holy See and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Director of the European Parliament's Liaison Office in Washington, D.C., Vice-Rector of the College of Europe in Natolin, and an EU expert on parliamentary advisory programs. He was a co-founder and President of the Robert Schuman Foundation in Poland, as well as an active member of intellectual and Catholic communities.

We will remember him as a man of dialogue, wisdom, and profound dedication to the future of Poland and Europe.

May His Memory Be Honoured!

Dean, Vice-Deans, and the entire academic community
of the Faculty of Economics, University of Gdańsk
