I like coming back… Summary of the Alumni Meeting on the occasion of 55 years of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk

Saturday, May 31, 2025, will be remembered for a long time by those who helped shape the history and identity of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdansk.

The Graduate Meeting, held on the occasion of the 55th anniversary, was more than just a jubilee - it was a meeting of generations, a return to the roots, and a celebration of a community whose heart remains a passion for science, an openness to the world, and a responsibility for the future.

The meeting was held in the Tadeusz Ocioszyński Auditorium. The guests were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, dr hab. Wojciech Bizon, prof. UG, and among those present were former deans, vice-deans, graduates, employees, and friends of the Faculty, including Dr. h.c. UG, former Prime Minister of Poland Jan Krzysztof Bielecki.

The presence of Deans and Deputy Deans of all terms was one of the symbolic and moving moments of the Alumni Meeting on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk. They have been setting the direction of development for years, making key decisions, supporting student and employee initiatives, and, above all, building the identity of the Faculty. Their presence emphasized the continuity of academic tradition, as well as respect for history.

The meeting of generations of the Faculty's management – people who held responsible positions at different moments in the university's development – allowed us to see how much we have achieved as a community and what strong foundations stand behind the current success of the Faculty of Economics. The ceremony was attended by the Deans: prof. dr hab. Janusz Neider (1990-1996), prof. dr hab. Jan Burnewicz (1996-2002), dr hab. Krzysztof Dobrowolski, prof. UG (2008-2016), dr hab. Monika Bąk, prof. UG (years 2016-2024), dr hab. Wojciech Bizon, prof. UG (from 2024), as well as Deputy Deans: prof. dr hab. Mirosław Chaberek, dr hab. Henryk Ćwikliński, prof. UG, dr hab. Stanisław Miecznikowski, prof. UG, dr hab. Krystyna Żołądkiewicz, prof. UG, dr hab. Przemysław Borkowski prof. UG, dr Tomasz Gutowski, dr Magdalena Markiewicz, dr hab. Leszek Czerwonka, prof. UG, dr Leszek Reszka, prof. UG. Their joint presence was not only a beautiful gesture but also an expression of responsibility and passing on values to future generations.

During the ceremony, we looked back together – from the secret beginnings of the Maritime Institute in 1942, through the establishment of the Higher School of Maritime Trade in Gdynia, the transformation into the Higher School of Economics in Sopot, the birth of the University of Gdańsk in 1970, to today's modern and open to the world Faculty of Economics. The milestones that created our identity were recalled in a passionate presentation delivered by dr Magdalena Markiewicz – with humour, pride and great respect for history.

During the “Inspiring Stories from the Life of the Faculty of Economics” part, Mr. Julian Skelnik, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark and member of the Expert Council of the Faculty of Economics, referred to the off-lectures as a Graduate. In his elegant and humorous lecture, which captivated all the participants at the meeting, he recalled the student life, important places and academic customs.

Then the auditorium was filled with music during a concert by the WE graduate, Mr. Adam Kalinowski, winner of The Voice of Poland and Idol, who with his voice and emotions perfectly complemented the atmosphere of this special day, performing his own song "Wodospady" and a cover of "Come Together" by "The Beatles", which perfectly matched the message of the event.

The event was accompanied by many emotional moments.

A specially prepared anniversary book was displayed in the faculty hall, signed by the guests present at the ceremony.

There was no shortage of time for networking, exploring the nooks and crannies of the faculty, taking group photos, savouring coffee, and - most importantly - conversations that easily crossed the barriers of years and generations.

At the end, a commemorative photo of the Graduates was taken - a symbol of the unity and strength of our community.

We thank everyone who was with us. This day showed that although decades have passed, the values that unite us have remained unchanged.

Because the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk is not just a place – it is the people, memories and relationships that last and make up the 55 years of the unique history of the University of Gdańsk.

The commemorative book is still available in the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Economics (room A127) – we cordially invite you to visit and make an entry.

We would like to thank all the Graduates for coming!

We would also like to thank the entire community of the Faculty of Economics, Employees and Students for their participation in organizing the ceremony!

See you at the next reunion!
