Science, business and a common goal, which is to develop the region in response to contemporary market needs was the subject of the agreement between the University of Gdańsk and the Pomerania Development Agency.

On January 22, 2025, the ceremonial signing of the agreement  took place. The main assumptions of the cooperation include activities promoting the Pomeranian Voivodeship as a dynamic academic center, supporting innovation and the development of the local labor market.

The agreement was signed by representatives of both parties: the Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, and representing the Pomerania Development Agency, the President of the Management Board Sławomir Kosakowski and the Vice-President of the Management Board Piotr Ciechowicz.

The meeting was attended by the coordinators of the agreement, dr Magdalena Markiewicz, Deputy Dean for Development and Cooperation with the Socio-Economic Environment of the Faculty of Economics , and mgr Aleksandra Stenke, Head of the UG Careers Office, and on behalf of the Agency, Wojciech Tyborowski, Director of Invest in Pomerania and Karolina Nawrocka-Mucha.

The Rector of the University of Gdańsk, prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski pointed out that the model of cooperation between science and business is changing, and that building an ecosystem and a new pattern of action is an important factor in strengthening the potential of the province. Educating staff for the economy is a significant challenge both in the short and long term. Activities in this area are based, among others, on new educational formats, including the introduction of micro-credentials, certifications and ordered courses.

The President of the ARP, Sławomir Kosakowski, noted that cooperation between business and the university is natural, especially in the field of conducting research and analysis. The university is an important institutional substantive partner in many projects strengthening the potential of the region, while the Agency is an important partner attracting foreign investors, supporting domestic entrepreneurs and development activities in the area of the business environment in the Pomeranian province.

- Many initiatives initiated by universities require cooperation with entrepreneurs - says dr Magdalena Markiewicz, Deputy Dean for Development and Cooperation with the Socio-Economic Environment of the Faculty of Economics. - The Pomerania Development Agency is an organization that cooperates with many enterprises in the region and combines the interests of people who strive for the same: the development of the region. Our cooperation with PDA has been ongoing for many years and brings many benefits in terms of supporting cooperation between business and universities. Examples include initiatives that strengthen entrepreneurship, such as the Pomeranian Export Broker or the pro-investment activities of Invest in Pomerania.

The subject of the signed agreement is to strengthen substantive cooperation between the University of Gdańsk and the Pomerania Development Agency. As part of the agreement, numerous initiatives have been planned to support the development of students' competences and their preparation for professional challenges. The agreement is an important step towards synergy between education and the economy of the region.

The University of Gdańsk, as a leading academic centre in the region, has been implementing numerous projects in cooperation with external entities for years, supporting innovation and sustainable development. PDA successfully implements initiatives promoting the Pomeranian Voivodeship as an attractive place to live and work, as well as invest - which is encouraged, among others, by an appropriate resource of well-educated staff. The UG Careers Office - in cooperation with the faculties of our university - regularly organizes workshops, training courses and job fairs, which enable students to meet potential employers.

The signed agreement opens up new opportunities for cooperation and provides a solid foundation for future initiatives, such as: the organization of dedicated internship programs; the development of joint research and development projects or increasing the number of events integrating students, scientists and entrepreneurs.

Combining academic knowledge with business practice is not only a chance for career development for students, but also for increasing the innovation and competitiveness of the Pomeranian economy. The joint actions of both parties are aimed at emphasizing the potential of the region and enabling its further development as one of the key academic and business centers in Poland.
