Interreg Circular Ports

interreg-baltic

We are happy to announce that the team of Prof. Ernest Czermanski, Head of the Department of Maritime Economy in the Department of Transport and Maritime Trade of the Faculty of Economics, has received funding under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region 2021-2027 programme, Priority No. 3, Area 3.1 Circular Economy - the project 'Circular Ports: Deploying Circular Economy in port environment'. The project will run for 36 months, starting in March 2025.

Circular Ports focuses on the implementation of closed loop economy (GOZ) strategies in the ports of the Baltic Sea region. As centres of industry, logistics and waste management, ports provide an ideal environment for testing solutions that quantitatively reduce waste and emissions by reusing them as materials and raw materials.

Project objectives:

  • Development of tools to support the implementation of GOZ strategies in ports,
  • Pilot activities demonstrating the potential of closed-loop circulation in the port environment,
  • Building cooperation between port stakeholders and the industry sector,
  • Promoting innovative business models and system changes in the approach to waste management.

The project involved a wide range of international partners, including:

  • Ports: Port of Hamburg (Germany), Port of Aalborg (Denmark), Port of Tallinn (Estonia), Port of Norrköping (Sweden), Port of Mustola (Finland),
  • Research Institutes: Hamburg Institute for Innovation, Climate Protection and Circular Economy (Germany), LAB University of Applied Sciences (Finland), RISE Research Institutes of Sweden (Sweden),
  • Business support organisations: Baltic Ports Organisation (Estonia), Centrum Balticum Foundation (Finland),
  • Companies: EMR Metal Recycling (Germany), Metcom (Poland), Enefit Green (Estonia).

Through this international cooperation, we will be able to jointly create models that can be successfully replicated in other regions of Europe.

Project outcomes include:

  • Standards for measuring and reporting GOZ performance,
  • Digital platforms to monitor material flows,
  • Training programmes for port workers and campaigns to raise awareness of the benefits of GOZ.

We would like to thank all the partners involved and invite you to follow our activities now! We also invite you to learn about other Interreg projects that have been implemented by Prof. Ernest Czermanski's team in recent years, including the Blue Supply Chains project, COMBINE and also the CRISTAL project, funded by the European Union.
