The Faculty of Economics is continuing the tradition of the Sopot center of economic studies which descended from the Maritime Institute which was created in 1942 in Warsaw as a part of the Secret University of Western Lands. The Maritime Institute traditions were continued by: Higher School of Seaborne Trade (1945-1952) and Higher Economic School (1952-1970). On 20 March 1970 the Cabinet of the People’s Republic of Poland voted to create University of Gdansk. It was formed by a merger of the Higher School of Economics in Sopot with the Higher School of Pedagogics in Wrzeszcz.

Today, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdansk (up to 1993 Faculty of Economics of Transportation) is an academic center with full academic rights.

The Faculty of Economics of the UG has participated in the academic year 2009/2010 in the trendence Graduate Barometer 2010. The European Student Barometer has grown to be the largest survey on career, education and employer topics in Europe. More than 850 institutions in 24 countries took part and about 220 000 students answered the survey. The students were asked about their preferences and expectations in their future career, their satisfaction with their university, and the attractiveness of future employers.
