Professor Jean H.P. Paelinck

Professor Jean H.P. Paelinck from the Erasmus University of Rotterdam for his achievements in the area of spatial economy, econometrics and statistics and for engagement in cooperation with University of Gdańsk was awarded with honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Gdańsk on 25th of February 1993.
Jean Paelinck was born on July 4th 1930 at Antwerp. He received a master degree in Economics and Master in Commercial and Financial Science, also maxima cum laude (1954). He started his research work in the Belgian National Scientific Foundation (1956-1958). He was research student at Cambridge University (England), Department of Applied Economics, where Professor Sir Richard Stone (Economics Nobel Laureate) having been his supervisor. He conducted lectures as a Professor at many universities in France, Belgium and Netherlands. He was a visiting professor at many universities in USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, Colombia, Poland, Japan and China.

Since 1995 he is an emeritus professor of the Faculty of Economics of Erasmus University Rotterdam (The Netherlands), where he lectured since 1969 on theoretical spatial economics and chaired (1969-1991) that department.

He was awarded by many universities with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa, amongst other are: University of Poitiers, France, 1981; Academy of Economics at Katowice, Poland, 1987; University of Bourgogne, Dijon, France, 1988; University of Ghent, Belgium, 1989; University of Geneva, 1992; Warsaw School of Economics, Poland, 1993.

He was an expert and researcher at many international institutions: Research Fellow of the Tinbergen Institute, Rotterdam , 1993; Honorary Research Fellow, since 1995; Head of the Division of Structures of the Commission of the European Economic Communities (1963- 1965); Director of the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI), secretary of its Board of Administrators, 1969- 1992; OECD (1966-1986); United Nations (1966 and 1968).

Prof. Paelinck was the fourth recipient of the “Founder’s Medal” of the Regional Science Association International in 1996, and first recipient of the medal of the “Association de Science Régionale de Langue Française” also in 1996.

He received the Walter Isard Award of the North American Regional Science Council for distinguished scholarly achievements in the field of Regional Science in 1998. In 2003 he was a winner of European Prize in Regional Science 2003 of the European Regional Science Association.

He was/is a member of Editing Boards: AEA & Macmillan, Series in Applied Econometrics; Cahiers Scientifiques des Transports; Review of Urban and Regional Development Studies; Revue d’Economie Politique; Revue d’Economie Régionale et Urbaine; Région et Développement; Health and System Science; Estudios de Economía Applicada.

He published over 400 articles and more than 50 books (including chapters).
