On September 30, 2019, the inauguration of the academic year 2019/2020 took place at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk.
Students and employees of the Faculty of Economics and Faculty guests came to the ceremony,
including presidents and representatives of management boards of Pomeranian enterprises cooperating with the Faculty of Economics and, according to tradition, our retired Professors who worked at the Faculty for many years.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the authorities of other departments of the University of Gdańsk, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, dr hab. Mariusz Makowski, prof. UG and the Director of the Foreign Language Center, Ms Alina Swebocka and representatives of other universities, including the Dean of the Faculty of Management and Economics of the Gdańsk University of Technology, dr hab. Julita Wasilczuk, prof. PG and former Vice-Rector of the Gdańsk University of Technology, prof. dr hab. Piotr Dominiak.
Special guests of the ceremony were prof. Grzegorz Kołodko, lecturer at the Kozminski University in Warsaw, Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Finance in 1994–1997 and 2002–2003, and prof. James Kenneth Galbraith from Lyndon B. Johnson School of Business Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin.
The ceremony was honored by the presence of the Vice-Rector for Information Technology and Internationalization of the University of Gdańsk dr hab. Aneta Oniszczuk-Jastrząbek, prof. UG.
Vice Rector dr hab. Aneta Oniszczuk-Jastrząbek, prof. UG in her speech spoke about the changes introduced by the reform of higher education and the transition period that awaits the academic community. She also pointed to the successes of the University of Gdańsk in obtaining funds for the implementation of development projects and a high level of internationalization.
Then Dean of the Faculty of Economics dr hab. Monika Bąk, prof. UG, in her speech recalled the genesis of the establishment of the Faculty of Economics dating back to World War II and its traditions, also spoke about the current achievements of the Faculty, its employees and students, extensive international cooperation and visits of foreign professors and challenges for the coming years, highlighting the successes of the faculty employees in scientific and development projects.
In the next part of the ceremony, a doctoral promotion took place with the participation of the Vice-Rector of the University of Gdańsk and the Dean of the Faculty.

As usual, the emotional moment was the matriculation of the first-year students associated with taking the oath by the Students.
The Vice-Rector of the University of Gdańsk and the Dean of the Faculty of Economics presented gifts with the logo of the Faculty of Economics to first-cycle students who obtained the highest number of points in the recruitment procedure.

The inaugural lecture on "Old and New Pragmatism: Challenges and Opportunities for Economics" was delivered by Prof. James K. Galbraith.
Professor James K. Galbraith outlined the problems and perspectives of economics in an international dimension in an extremely transparent way, paying attention to issues arising from the challenges of sustainable development, recalled the historical experience of the world and Poland, and recommended students to engage in the greatest possible dimension in shaping the future of today’s world.
James Kenneth Galbraith heads the Department of Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government / Business Relations at Lyndon B. Johnson School of Business Affairs at the University of Texas. He is a graduate of Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (MA, M.Phil, PhD). In the early 1980s, James K. Galbraith was the executive director of the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress. He chaired the Economists for Peace and Security organization (1996-2016). He managed the UTIP (University of Texas Inequality Project) research team dealing with measuring and explaining income inequalities around the world. In 2014, together with Angus Deaton, he became the Leontief Award winner for expanding the limits of economic thought, and in 2016 he was an advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders in the presidential campaign. He is the managing editor in the journal Structural Change and Economic Dynamics. James K. Galbraith is the son of John Kenneth Galbraith, a well-known economist and diplomat, a supporter of post-Keynesianism, who made a huge contribution to the development of institutional economics in the 20th century.
At the end of the official part of the ceremony the Choir of the University of Gdańsk under the direction of the Director, prof. dr hab. Marcin Tomczak performed the traditional academic hymn "Gaudeamus Igitur".
