The meeting “Development of the maritime economy. The seminar on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Port of Gdynia” was held at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk in Sopot in the form of an open meeting of the Council of Experts of the Faculty of Economics in cooperation with the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.

The unique, open formula of the meeting of the Council of Experts was inspired by study visits to institutions and enterprises organized as part of the faculty's cooperation with the socio-economic environment.

The participants of the seminar were welcomed by: dr hab. Monika Bšk, prof.UG, Dean of the UG Faculty of Economics and Kazimierz Koralewski - Vice-President of the Management Board of the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.

In her speech, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, dr hab. Monika Bšk professor at the University of Gdansk emphasized - "The Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk has been associated with the maritime economy since its inception, and in fact it was created on the basis of education for the needs of the maritime economy and the Pomeranian region as a continuator of the tradition of the University of Maritime Trade established in 1946.

Currently, our programs studies include many specializations related to maritime topics, e.g. Logistics or the English-language specialization Logistics and Mobility, but two specialties should be mentioned as related to this subject in a special way. The first one is International transport and maritime trade in the field of international economic relations, offered both at the first and second degree studies, is a specialization with many years of tradition and particularly intensive cooperation with Tri-City seaports. The second one is a unique specialty, Offshore Sectors, offered from this year, which has received the patronage of several institutions and where the most important issues related to the development of offshore wind energy and other maritime sectors will be discussed.”

The Vice-President of the Management Board - Mr. Kazimierz Koralewski drew attention to the perspective of 100 years of development of the Port of Gdynia and the assumptions regarding development activities in the near future - "we are aware that the achievements of our predecessors are also our obligation to set new goals, the achievement of which is necessaryto strengthen the role of the Port of Gdynia among the ports of the Baltic Sea.The ongoing work on updating the port's development strategy and the multi-million-dollar investments continued in the port confirm our readiness to take concrete action.” The decision taken a hundred years ago to build a "seaport near Gdynia" allowed for the realization of bold visions and the creation of a modern and competitive Port, which has been a stimulator of the development of the city of Gdynia and the entire region to this day.

Dr. Tomasz Nowosielski, assistant professor at the Department of Maritime Transport and Trade at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdańsk, in his speech presented issues concerning the essence and evolution of the concept of maritime economy and its components. He paid particular attention to issues related to the functioning of sea shipping and the role of seaports, which form the global transport system. Activities related to the introduction of the concept of sustainable development are also presented, which are to reduce the impact of the operation of ships and seaports on the natural environment.

Then, Mr. Mateusz Kubicki, an employee of the Historical Research Office of the Institute of National Remembrance, Gdańsk Branch and a doctoral student at the Faculty of History of the University of Gdańsk, talked about the emergence of the Polish maritime economy after Poland regained independence and the place of this economy in the hierarchy of the country's economic structure.

The speech covered the historical perspective of the development of the port, from the twenty years and the development of Gdynia, through the period after 1945 and the times of the People's Republic of Poland, as well as changes after 1989.
