The University of Gdansk (UG) is a well-recognized public higher educational institution and the largest educational institution in the Pomeranian region. It was founded on 20 March 1970 as an amalgamation of two institutions of higher education: the Higher Economics School in Sopot and the Higher Pedagogical School in Gdansk. Later, it also included the Higher Teacher Training School.




Currently, the University offers 11 faculties with over 27 000 students, doctoral students and post-graduates, who are taught by 1 700 academic staff at different degrees (from bachelor through master, doctoral to post-diploma studies, including also the Executive Master of Business Administration). The University provides education in 72 fields of study, comprising 222 specializations, in day and weekend studies, including these entirely conducted in English.





The University of Gdansk endorses the quality systems of education: Internal Quality Assurance System and the System of Academic Education Development. It is also recognised by the Polish Accreditation Commission at high or excellent level, and received from the European Commission the Human Resources Excellence in Reasearch Award.





The Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdansk is continuing the tradition of the Sopot centre of economic studies which descended from the Maritime Institute created in 1942 in Warsaw as a part of the Secret University of Western Lands. Today, the Faculty of Economics is an academic centre with full academic rights, highly rated by employers in Pomerania region. It has the right to award Bachelor's, Master's, doctoral, postdoctoral degrees and conducting professors procedures. It provides an education for a total of more than 3 400 students (full-time, part-time, postgraduate and doctoral students). Students may obtain a broad and thorough knowledge in three fields: Economics, International Economic Relations and Chemical Business (in cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry). Classes are taught upon world standards, including: business, general and global economy, economic quantitative methods (mathematics, mathematical economics, computer science, statistics, econometrics, accounting), international settlements, organization and management, learning business, politics, civil law, commercial law and a number of courses individually tailored to the specialty. At the Faculty of Economics about 130 specialized research and teaching staff is employed at the Institute of International Business, Institute of Maritime Transport and Seaborne Trade, Chair of Microeconomics, Chair of Macroeconomics, Chair of Economic Policy, Chair of Economics of European Integration, Chairs of Transportation and Logistics and Research Centre of European Integration.




The Faculty of Economics provides a formal cooperation with employers concerning practical aspects of international education. The Expert Board was established to help to adapt curriculum content to the requirements of labour market specifying the specialties to the needs of employers. Additionally, over 20 courses are provided in the close cooperation with the practitioners, especially from the companies located in Gdansk business centres. This cooperation enhances and develops students’ skills for working in the international environment.


Students of the Faculty of Economics have at their disposal modern laboratories and facilities, such as: the Thomson Reuters Data Suite with its free access to financial information on economies, markets and companies; OSTC Trading Laboratory and an academic dealing room enabling to learn how to make financial transactions; Logistics Laboratories with SAP, ARIS and Oracle access; Information Technology workshops equipped with mobile technology and a modern Translation Laboratory. Faculty provides ACCA courses and examination. The University is also adapted to perform online teaching and learning initiatives.

Among many courses in English, since October 2008, the Faculty of Economics offers Bachelor and Master Degree Programs in International Business (IB). These unique degree programs in International Business are provided entirely in English. IB studies are one of a kind and give their participants access to exceptional knowledge and expertise about strategic and global business management, marketing, financial issues as well as specific insights into business system. The full-time programs give students the latest theoretical knowledge of contemporary business environment. During academic years of 2008-2016, 303 students were graduated at the Bachelor degree and 169 students at the Master degree.
