Alverno College Students visit

Posted on 2014-05-27

The aim of the project is to investigate the ways that culture, economic development, political dynamics and the environment are all affected by the location on the water of such cities as Milwaukee, where Alverno College is located, and Gdańsk, Kalmar, Malmo and Copenhagen. During their stay in Gdańsk, the participants experienced the educational, turistic, economic and historic qualities of Gdańsk.

The official part of the visit took place at the Faculty of Economics where Alverno College representatives met with Faculty's authorities and students and learned how the University of Gdańsk motto - in mari via tua - is implemented in the scientific and research practice.

Due to the cooperation with The Mayor's Office of City Promotion, the American group got a first-hand look on how Gdańsk utilises the body of water it shares. The students visited i.e. the amber gallery, beaches of Gdańsk and took a cruise to Westerplatte. Together with the city guide, they learned about the city's history and its main turistic monuments. The group also took part in some of the events of the Baltic Science Festival.

The project "Coastal Cities: Baltic Sea" has been launched for the first time this year. The American class has been studying Milwaukee, Gdańsk, Kalmar, Malmo and Copenhagen as coastal cities all semester. As a final part of the project, a group of 15 embarked on an 11-day journey to the Baltic Sea.

Apart from the educational value, the visit of Alverno College group aimed also at initiating the cooperation between the American college and Faculty of Economics. The visit was supported by the City of Gdańsk.
