Meeting of the Board of Experts

On September 22, 2020, a meeting of the Board of Experts of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Gdansk took place. The meeting was held online for the first time. The formulas adopted during the pandemic were used in the form of a live interactive meeting, which initiated a new stage of communication between representatives of the academic community and the economic environment.

The main topic of the meeting was "Time of changes for education and economy".

In the first part of the meeting, two presentations on current issues were related to the functioning of universities in the new conditions.

The participants were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, dr hab. Monika Bšk, prof. UG. The Dean presented the concept of university and faculty work in the conditions resulting from the limitations related to the pandemic, including assumptions of work in the hybrid system provided at the Faculty of Economics, as well as changes, new investments and technological facilitations related to the transition to the distance learning system. Prof. UG, dr hab. Monika Bšk also pointed to structural changes at the Faculty of Economics.

Then, the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Dr Magdalena Markiewicz, presented information on cooperation with enterprises and institutions in the field of bachelor's and master's theses prepared at the Faculty of Economics and the impact of this cooperation on the results of learning at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Gdansk. With regard to the presented data, the representatives of the Board of Experts, proposed the ways to strengthen this cooperation and the process of selecting theses’ topics related to the needs of the socio-economic environment.

A traditional element of the meeting of the Council of Experts is a professor's lecture.

On September, 22, the lecture "The economy of Poland and the world in the face of a pandemic" was given by Professor Dariusz Filar, expert in the history of economic thought, macroeconomics and the functioning of transnational enterprises. In the years 2004-2010 he was a member of the Nantional Bank of Poland's Monetary Policy Council, in the years 2010-2014 a member of the Economic Council to the Prime Minister, a member of the European Council of Economists, author of many expert opinions and opinions and publications, including "Between a Green Island and a Drifting Floe. Polish economy in 2007-2015" and "On the wrong course. Politics and economy of Poland in 2015-2020." Prof. Dariusz Filar is also the co-author of the “Economic Alert” which is the expert assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the condition of the world and Polish economy.

During his lecture Professor Dariusz Filar shared his reflections on the determinants and effects of the level of GDP, inflation, public debt in European countries in 2020, also referring to the dynamics of cash circulation in central banks, conditions related to the level of minimum wages and entrepreneurs' expectations expressed, among others, by PMI. The lecture contributed to active discussions and many questions. The guests shared their experiences, opinions and observations in the context of problems and challenges that entrepreneurs may face, and strategies for dealing with them.
